MUMBAI: The trailer for "The Narmada Story," a Hindi-language crime thriller starring serving Indian Police Service (IPS) officer Simala Prasad, was released this week ahead of the film's theatrical debut on June 12. The 2-minute, 15-second trailer, directed by Zaigham Imam and produced under the AB Infosoft Creation and Golden Ratio banners, depicts a police investigation into a series of disappearances in Narmadapuram, Madhya Pradesh.
The film is notable for casting a sitting police officer in a leading role, a casting choice the makers say is intended to lend authenticity to the depiction of policing and women's safety issues in central India.
Plot and Setting
According to the trailer, the narrative opens with the unexplained disappearance of Police Inspector Purushottam Bhadauriya, who had been investigating a string of missing-persons cases in Narmadapuram. The investigation is then taken up by Sub-Inspector Narmada Rayakwar, played by Prasad. The trailer references a "kinnar gang" antagonist and includes sequences depicting protest action, police encounters, and the rescue of abducted women.
The promotional material features the dialogue, "There is no gender difference in the police force; the uniform itself is enough," which the makers have positioned as the film's thematic anchor.
Cast and Crew
Alongside Prasad, the cast includes National Award-winning actress Anjali Patil, Ashwini Kalsekar, Zarina Wahab, Raghubir Yadav, Mukesh Tiwari, Sharad Singh, and Ishtiyak Khan. The film is directed by Zaigham Imam, whose previous credits include "Dozakh in Search of Heaven" and "Nakkash."
In a statement issued by the production house, Prasad said the project drew on her field experience. "'The Narmada Story' is not just a film, but the voice of those girls and women who never stop fighting even in difficult circumstances," she said. "Being a police officer, I have witnessed many real-life incidents, and while playing this character, I felt every emotion with honesty and truth."
Director Zaigham Imam, in the same statement, said the film "brings forward a serious issue in society," adding that it combines crime and suspense with a focus on women's safety.
Background: An IPS Officer on Screen
Simala Prasad, a 2010-batch IPS officer of the Madhya Pradesh cadre, has previously appeared in regional and independent films alongside her policing duties. Her on-screen appearances have drawn public attention given the rarity of serving officers taking on acting roles in India. Departmental permissions are typically required for such off-duty professional engagements by serving officers.
Release and Outlook
"The Narmada Story" is scheduled for a theatrical release on June 12. The makers have not yet announced an OTT streaming partner or a satellite broadcast window. The trailer is available on the film's official YouTube channel.
The film's commercial prospects will be closely watched given the recent run of mid-budget Hindi crime dramas at the domestic box office.
